    Trackday experience

I am trying to think of something which I can do for my birthday money and always fancied one of these trackday / rally day experiences. Has anyone done any of these before or what to look out for, Between £200-£300 to spend and don't fancy one of these turn up and do 3 laps and go. But I also have the problem of height being nearly 6ft4 and shoe size which I will have to see if I can actually drive the car before booking, don't think they will allow me to drive bare foot with just using my toes like I have had to do in the past

Or any other ideas on what I should go for, hate having to think what presents I want

    Re: Trackday experience

I did a corporate day at Silverstone on the small track.
About 45 minutes in a Lotus Elise with a instructor teaching you the lines, then jumped in a formula first (single seater) for about an hour. Definitely recommend that.

My mate did a Rally experience somewhere in Wales in a Lancer Evo - he didn't reckon it was all that.

    Re: Trackday experience

I was look at the Exige track day, which was 9 laps round Silverstone including a hot lap round with the instructor which didn't look too bad.

But that's the sort of thing with the instructor showing best lines and how to approach the corners etc and then wouldn't mind a single seater but thinking size might not be ideal with that.

    Re: Trackday experience

10 years ago I did the one at Brands, also in turbo'd Cossie Escorts.

They were set for the tarmac I think as they also used them for that, enormous turbo lag for the slower speeds of the rally stages.

Was eventually good fun and by the end I wanted to do it a lot more.

    BUT....

It was not all that enjoyable for the first part as, after the class room briefing, they just put you in the drivers seat with an instructor and you fumble and bumble and it's overly frustrating and a waste a money.

Eventually I started to do my own thing and got faster and faster and started to enjoy it.

THEN ONLY AT THE END the instructor drove and showed me what I was supposed to be doing. A totally different way to drive with the back FULLY out everywhere from way before corners, facing the opposite direction, etc.

If they'd done that proper instruction at the beginning it would saved wasting nearly the whole time trying to figure out how to get the car to change direction in the mud instead of understeer all time and I could have got on with enjoying it from the start.

They told me they don't instruct that way around as they had too many people colliding with trees, etc.

I did this a few years back and have to say that it was excellent.

It may just have been my instructor but he pushed me continually, the cars were nicely prepared any they got used hard. I couldn't fault it. No guarantee that things are still the same of course.

    Re: Trackday experience

I done a rally taster day in Brackley a few years ago.
Drver briefing, 6 laps of a small rally track - tarmac, gravel and dirt secions involved. Then a hot lap with the instructor.
It was a really great day but after the 6 laps you feel like you've just warmed up. They offered a more in depth day which is as expected, a thorough day in a rally car shredding it up.
Mine was a simple red letter package though. But it was in a fully prepped mk2 Escort

If that's the kind of thing you were after then you're better off calling/visiting a cantre and booking direct.

That's the sort of thing I am after will read up more on that later and see what other things they do.

I can do track days, or even drive to the ring but want something I can get something from and the one Andy says looks spot on and not a turn up do couple of laps and go away

Yeah people over 6ft1 really struggle with single seaters.
I'm 6ft3 and have never found anybody who accommodates 6ft1+

    Re: Trackday experience

buy a ****ter of a polo or the like and a full trackday, with the intention of blowing the bollocks of the car, me and the boss have done that a few times, (he races in the irish superbikes and global lights) and its genuinly the most fun you can have, as you dont need to worry about the car in the slightest
