Turbo 2 project purchase advice

Hi I'm looking for a bit of advice on buying a turbo 2.
Here's the scenario, I've got a mate who's had a red turbo 2 for about 8-10 years, he bought it in standard' ish form apart from it having a right hand drive conversion (gtt bulkhead and gordini dash).
3 years ago he decided to restore it back to left hand drive and give it a full respray. He stripped most of the exterior and interiortrim off it and tried sourcing a turbo 2 front end. He found a guy who had a decient t2 shell who needed the back and and agreed to cut and sell the front end to my mate. The guy with the spare shell had sent my mate a pic of the spare shell and it all looks ok but he's been fobbing my mate off for for about a year saying he's not got round to cutting the shell. Personally I think he's already sold it.
So my mates t2 has been sat stripped for 3 years now and his personal circumstances are changing his gf wants a wedding, house family etc and with money being tight his gf isn't going to let him Spend the money on the t2 that it needs to finish it. Apparently he's already spent a bomb on new parts like wishbones etc. The shell is solid no rust at all and engine ran fine before the strip down.
So I'm thinking of making him an offer but don't want to get myself into a money pit where everything I buy for it is either custom made or extorsionally priced.

To fully restore etc i dont think you will see change from 10k ontop of the purchase price thats alot.

I had one in my garage, some local members will remember, and if im honest it was a **** box but still fetched 13k..

Are parts that expensive?
A respray would be around £1500/ 2k with minimal welding. So that would leave £8k on parts.

It all depends on condition but parts will not be found at the local factors .French specialists , JPR and a few others but not for GTT money .
If you are into chopping out the front then it may well go deeper .
Think long and hard as it could easily turn into a money pit ...10k could easily go without too much effort .
Expert inspection a must .Those RAOC figures are well out of date

I'm not really bothered about converting it back to left hand drive ATM as I think it's safer to drive a rhd car on the left side of the road. I'd love a maxi kit like blots old car tho.
Any examples of parts prices and a list of parts that are no longer available? I've looked on eBay uk and France for spare parts but there scarce to say the least.

Yeh no problem I'll let u know if it's for sale and I don't buy it. My mate is still reluctant to sell it ATM.

you dont need a new front end.
they use one panel to convert to a right hand drive - not gtt related at all.
the front end is basically the same as a mk1 5 - no need for t2 front end.
i also think you wont need that many new parts. - if you have a working engine thats most of the battle done.
however, rust is the killer. - check sills and floorpan.
almost all have been crashed, check rear chassis legs for unusual ripples and creases.
it'll be worth between £15k-£25k when done.
has it got history?

The front end and sills are solid not sure about the floor pan because all the stripped trim is in the car. I'll have a proper look next week and take a few pics. I'll also be checking rear chasis legs for crash damage. (good tip, cheers for the info guys)

they like to fold on the chassis leg, where the lower rear wishbone attaches to the chassis......usually between the two mounting bolts.

You need to check round the head lights and the inner wings where the outer wings bolt to also

It's not that parts are not available, I emailed 3s about a clutch for mine I sent it in English and they never replied. The parts are there it's just getting hold of them.

I payed 800 quid for some wheels that had been in a garage for 10 years ffs, stuff IS a lot of money the only person who imports bit over her is John price or 2nd hand bit you can get from a lad called mark aka maxi man

Owning a turbo 2 is a privilege, no two are the same, I feel one you own one and sell it you couldn't have another one unless its the one you sold as its just not the same

Cheers for the info guys I feel more informed now, like i've got a better idea on what to look out for now. Where as before it was more a leap of faith.
There's some good links to suppliers to that I would never have found as there next to nothing on eBay. I guess it's who you no not what u know with old classics.
