    spot weld drill bits

as title really, are they worth using?

i guess the idea behind them is to go through the part you're removing without damaging the part you're keeping. do they work? or save a few £s and use a normal bit?

    thoughts please?

spot weld bits have a sharp centre and then a flat cut, they'll drill the weld, but wont go through the panel unless you want them too... hope that makes sense

cheers mark, it does make sense, just not sure if i should buy one, as in will it make the job easier and how long do they last as i guess you couldn't resharpen them as you would a normal hss bit

my bro has had one for years, he's recently used it to unpick the entire front end of his ph1 from the struts foreward.. and its still going strong. get a good one and it should last, they only cut through a tiny ammount every time and i dont think a spot weld is a hard as an arc weld

    Re: spot weld drill bits

its taken him 3 months of an hour or two couple of nights a week, we finally welded all the new bits on the other week.. combination if spot welds with a mig and stitch welds on the bits that looked like they needed to be stronger.. no science, but i'm sure it'll be sturdyer than when it rolled out the factory

its the 1st time he's attempted anything like that...

here is a thread on it if you're interested

    Re: spot weld drill bits

just had a skim through and it's looking good, my biggest problem is my car has been sorn for awhile now and it's at my parents so i can't just go out and do a couple of hours but hopefully i'll remotavate myself and get it done, no more out of sight out of mind.

did he use all renault parts or just bit's that aren't available from places like beevers?
