View Full Version : Good quality body shop in East London/Essex?

Not quite sure where to stick this thread but I'm currently saving my pennies for a full respray of my 5 (although I've decided to leave the engine in place). Can anybody recommend a body shop to do an absolutely top notch job?

The shell is in pretty good condition with only a couple of trolley dings, there is a very small paint/rust bubble at the bottom of the rear window which will need attention and similar sized paint/rust bubbles in the very bottom corners of each of the "B" posts. I'd imagine that when the paint is stripped right back and this rust is more visible it will probably be worse than it now appears. Finally, although I've never removed the rear bumper I think there may be some rust around the area where the bumper is mounted to the shell, this may require some welding.

The car is currently silver, I'd like it to be sprayed black. Can anybody hazard a guess how much dough I'll need to save for a top quality job? I know it's a bit of a "how long's a piece of string" question but I'm just looking for a ball park figure.

Thanks:)

Two months, crikey! Does it normally take that long? Portsmouth could be ok for me as I have family down there, but still quite a long way. Any ideas on total price? Are they dismantling your car for you or did you prep it yourself?

Not many silver ones left.......!

Is that because nobody bought them in the first place?!

I mean, I don't mind silver, its just not my favorite colour for a 5. if I kept it silver it would be a lot cheaper.

Its a question of, do I keep the car in absolutely original condition... or do I make myself happy by painting it the colour I prefer.

It's important to be happy right?

isn't it?

and what design would you recommend?

Chrome? Tiger stripes, paisley?!

I seem to remember you suggesting to someone else that they should "get it wrapped", a preference of yours is it?

Sell the silver one if you don't like the colour & buy a black one??

As regards Wrapping, this is a Silver Porsche 911 GT3 that was first wrapped white then wrapped into the Polizei stylee!!

Dude, I wasn't giving attitude, I was joking, I'm sorry it came across that way, I was just having a laugh.

Some of the wrapped cars do look good, but so much choice, what would you go with?

Ok I'm swaying to the idea of getting the silver touched up, where required. It would be kind of criminal to spray the silver out particularly without doing a complete dismantle down to the bare shell.

I could always get it wrapped after its been touched up. If I got it wrapped to look like a UK police car, how long do you think it would take for me to get arrested? or the car vandalized?

Get the car fully wrapped in black is what I originally meant.

As per Steve's post above, Tom's Porker was originally silver, he then had it fully wrapped in white, to which I couldn't tell the difference when I saw it in the flesh (I thought he had had the car resprayed, it looked that good), then he added the Polizei stickers for the Le Mans weekend he went to a few weeks back.

For sure it's a cheaper option getting a car wrapped, the finish is as good/looks as good as a respray, and if you get bored, regret, or whatever with the black colour, you can remove the wrap & your car's back to silver in a jiffy.

There's a new ish member (name escapes me now) on here who works for a company that specialises in vehicle wrapping. I'm sure he'll post up his comments if he sees this thread...

One of the guys on the MLR recently had his Evo fully wrapped (ie, simple colour swap) for £600.

I'm guessing a gtt would be circa a monkey...

I'd love to see it in the skin. T.K said he would probably be bringing his Porsche to ND - hope this is still the case!

I've got to say it does sound appealing. Cheaper, just as good, and probably lower maintainence too (no waxing etc.)

if it was wrapped in the style of a uk police car how long do you think it would take to get arrested?

I wonder if they could replicate the gt turbo side graphics?

I think you can get away with full battenburg or whatever livery, and even the lights & siren, as long as the word 'Police' isn't stickered anywhere on the bodywork.

Tom's the man to ask as he's well clued up in that dept :)

Another company (used by the MLR peeps) here: http://www.sjsdesign.com and yep, they'd have no problem replicating the gtt side graphics.

I just called sjs and they quoted £1200 squids for a complete GT turbo wrap with side graphics. Probably a third of the price of a full respray but still a lot of dosh

BriC

A third of a respray!? £1200 is more than I paid for a full respray!

Mart.. Was it this SJS company that did a Lancer for £600?

Racoon.co.uk just quoted £1100. Yes BriC, I had two quotes for a top quality full respray and both quoted upwards of 3K.... It could be a london thing?

True.. could be!

Depends where you go really. It was very cheap my respray. Some people swear by the more expensive jobs, but this one did the trick :)

Silly question time, but does this wrapping remove / cut out rust before hand? As when a full respray is done, this is where alot of the money is spent, cutting out and repairing the rust. It is very labour intensive.

Hmm, not having the word "police" on the car kind of spoils the whole thing for me. But a GT turbo police car would be awsome... but maybe I should grow up.

I don't know for sure but I don't think so as mostly it's done on new fleet cars/vans etc.

Bric, no it wasn't SJS. I can't remember the actual company name as it was a few weeks back & I only quickly glanced over the thread.

SJS does give a good discount to MLR members though, and have done a fair few Evo's now, hence probably have all the Evo models vinyl 'templates' to hand, thus making the wrap job cheaper per car.

£1100/£1200 seems bloody expensive, but then those companies may not have wrapped a gtt before, hence you pay the premium for being their guinea pig as such.

I'm sure Tom mentioned on an email I received from him a few weeks back that it only cost him £800 or so to have his porker wrapped white.

i use carerra in suffolk, they are awesomely awesome, think prices start a 2500 but you do get what you pay for, i've said before, a £300 job is gonna be crap no matter who does it, because decent paint/lacquer/materials is nearly that
