First post!

Hi,

New to rtoc, have a lovely tungy grey phase 2 in need of some tlc. Need to replace one of the con rods but no idea where to source one, or whether it's ok to replace just the one. I'm not a mechanic and this is my second rebuild so any advice gratefully received.

The reason it needs replacing - the thread's fecked in the rod itself caused by a flakey torque wrench and an over tightening of one of the bolts which holds the cap in place.

While I'm at it, can anyone can recommend a decent torque wrench which doesn't break the bank?

Thanks,
Jon

Thanks mate. I live just outside Southampton...handy! There are a few other bits I need to will pay Mike a visit.

I tried to upload some jpg's, smaller than the max size allowed, but it's failing every time. Will try again a bit later on.

Try Photobucket mate. That's what a majority on here use. I'm a basingstoke lad originally.

The chap I bought the car from liked his boost, a little bit too much by the look of things. He also kept GT Tuning in business for a while :)

Looks really nice that mate.

Hopefully you'll get the bottom end issue sorted and be back on the road ASAP

Nice car. I really like the wheels :agree:

Re the conrod. Don't you just need a new bolt for it rather than a new rod?

"the thread's fecked in the rod itself"

The conrod doesn't have a thread in it from memory, does it? I thought it was a replaceable bolt that goes through it with a nut on the end.

Edit:

You can see the bolt in this picture, it's certainly replaceable and I don't think it screws into the rod itself (it pushes in and is held in place by the shape of the head against the conrod)

It's been a while since I properly looked at one so I might be wrong of course! :D

I dunno. Aren't those bolts fixed in place somehow? If it was just a matter of replacing a nut and bolt, I guess this thread would not exist. You might be right though Alex. <shrug>

I don't think so Trev, although this might not be immediately apparent from looking at the conrod from under the car.....

Isn't the liner is out of the car? It would be unusual to leave the piston/rod in. So I'm guessing the rod is also out and can therefore be viewed properly.

Looks like you are right though Alex, you can indeed get these. They are weird at the top eh.

So it looks like £4 plus delivery should sort out your problem Jonny. I assume these bolts do just slip out and aren't some interference fit, or need to be matched to the rod/cap somehow. Maybe someone else knows on this score?

I'm glad the altzimers hasn't fully kicked in yet! I imagined those bolts to be quite a bit more than that. Good old Mike.
